TAKSHASILA UNIVERSITY – UNTOLD STORY
A university that was the precursor of all organized education that we know today
The University of Takshasila existed in Taxila as early as the 7th century BCE.
Takshasila means “City of Cut Stone” or “Rock of Taksha”, founded on a hill that commanded the river Tamra Nala, a tributary of the Indus.
The University of Takshasila existed in Taxila, Sanskrit Takshashila, an ancient city of northwestern India, the ruins of which are about 22 miles (35 km) northwest of Rawalpindi.
Learn MoreProject
Researching for the first medical school in history, Dr Adnan I. Qureshi discovered that Takshasila (modern name Taxila) was a place for formal medicine learning centuries before other medical schools were established. Upon further research, he realized that it was not only a center for learning for medicine but of many other faculties and can be considered as the first University of the World, a fact that is barely known and recognized.
This project will make a documentary about this untold story of how this learning center of the world existed centuries before any other University in the city of Takshasila!
Please support us in our effort to explore and share with the public all facts, myths, and stories about how centuries ago there was a center of learning where education was provided regardless of race, religion, or nationality!

Adnan I. Qureshi
MDAdnan I. Qureshi is a physician by profession but an explorer by heart. His first explorations across the globe came through medicine related travels. In each journey, he found the foreign cities and towns fascinating and local inhabitants and traditions even more fascinating. He learned to appreciate the beauty within the people whether it was a grandiose city decorated with skyscrapers or a small village in a distant jungle surrounded by serenity. His literary work tries to capture the visible and the invisible facets of the world that he visits, often contradicting the existing perceptions of those who reside far away. Whether it is the isolation camps in West Africa during the Ebola virus disease epidemic or Syria priming up for a civil war, Qureshi has ventured into the unknown and tried to provide a realistic perspective of the unknown. He follows his travel with extensive research into the history and socioeconomic structure that defined the destination of visit. His most recent book chronicles his travel to North Korea or Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, a journey borne out of curiosity and enriched by hospitality and tradition. As a person who grew up in the area around Taxila, in Pakistan, Adnan Qureshi is currently completing his research at the ancient University of Takshashila.
